00:00:00.040 --> 00:00:07.915
Sometimes the things we're saying make people feel bad about where they're on in their spiritual journey.

00:00:07.915 --> 00:00:13.250
Oh yeah, I'm actually up here on my spiritual path.

00:00:13.250 --> 00:00:14.313
You're down here.

00:00:14.313 --> 00:00:20.024
I've accepted Christ into my heart, so I'm living up here Until I'm hearing you say things like that.

00:00:20.024 --> 00:00:23.432
You haven't succeeded in this whole Christian enterprise.

00:00:23.432 --> 00:00:24.632
Sometimes we're turning people off.

00:00:24.632 --> 00:00:29.131
Sometimes we're turning people off, Sometimes we're frightening people away.

00:00:29.131 --> 00:00:32.749
Sometimes we're putting the bar too high.

00:00:32.749 --> 00:00:40.014
Sometimes we're just speaking in a different language than what that person's familiar with.

00:00:40.439 --> 00:00:48.274
So what I would leave you with is have you ever felt pressured to conform to some of these cliches of the faith?

00:00:48.274 --> 00:01:04.834
Or are people trying to get you to express yourself and your walk and your journey in particular terms that maybe sound more like them, or like the preacher on TV that they listen to, or like your pastor or your prayer leader?

00:01:04.834 --> 00:01:12.871
And I'm not saying that inspiration from other Christians or other believers is inappropriate.

00:01:12.871 --> 00:01:13.873
It's necessary.

00:01:13.873 --> 00:01:20.510
We need to see other people walking out their journey.

00:01:20.510 --> 00:01:29.719
The answer isn't to take that away journey.

00:01:29.719 --> 00:01:30.481
The answer isn't to take that away.

00:01:30.481 --> 00:01:37.623
But we need to be more mindful to not try to smash people into this little box, Regardless of where you're at right now with God or Christ, or your faith, or even outside of Christianity.

00:01:37.623 --> 00:01:42.769
No one likes to be pushed around right?

00:01:42.769 --> 00:01:57.671
If you're seeking help, if you're seeking a new kind of light in your life, for that to feel true to you you need to be able to express that in your own words.

00:01:58.221 --> 00:02:03.108
In the church that I belong to, people would get up and give testimonials.

00:02:03.108 --> 00:02:04.506
What's a testimonial?

00:02:04.506 --> 00:02:12.992
Nowadays, we think of testimonials as something that sells toothpaste, a car, a local chiropractor, the divorce attorney.

00:02:12.992 --> 00:02:15.848
Look at the testimonials from satisfied clients.

00:02:15.848 --> 00:02:32.056
If you're not familiar with a church or a Christian testimonial, what I believe they're supposed to be are unique, individualized accounts or expression or stories or tidbits, or even just tears.

00:02:32.056 --> 00:02:37.372
Tears are one of the most powerful testimonials you can offer.

00:02:37.372 --> 00:02:43.712
Most of us encounter times in our lives when we really are broken.

00:02:43.712 --> 00:02:48.383
We're on the edge of tears, we're on the edge of crumbling.

00:02:48.383 --> 00:02:52.433
Somehow he's intervened and answered our prayer.

00:02:52.433 --> 00:02:55.480
That's just such a profound relief.

00:02:55.480 --> 00:02:58.163
We feel so loved.

00:02:58.163 --> 00:03:01.907
We can just breathe a sigh of relief.

00:03:01.907 --> 00:03:17.275
This incredible tension, this burden, this catastrophe that was going to fall on us has been removed and that can just leave you in tears, and that's a powerful testimonial.

00:03:17.275 --> 00:03:22.580
But you can see how crazy it would be, and I've actually seen this, so I know this exists.

00:03:22.920 --> 00:03:24.966
Some places you go to give a testimonial.

00:03:24.966 --> 00:03:27.271
They're very formulaic.

00:03:27.271 --> 00:03:33.552
If you're sitting in the audience and people are getting up to give testimonials, it's like they're reading off a script.

00:03:33.552 --> 00:03:38.491
It seems artificial because life isn't a script.

00:03:38.491 --> 00:03:50.604
So everybody that's getting up talking about what they needed help with or what God helped them with if it's true, it should all sound and look different.

00:03:50.604 --> 00:03:58.183
If you had kids and they snuck out to a party and got caught, they've worked on their story.

00:03:58.183 --> 00:04:08.873
They all have this scripted story and you're just like dude, you guys all sound like you wrote up this script and all tried to memorize it and then come and sell it to us.

00:04:09.134 --> 00:04:16.190
People have a sense of when they're being sold to or when they're expected to present themselves a certain way.

00:04:16.190 --> 00:04:36.035
I would encourage you not to bow to that type of pressure, because when people try to get you to conform to a certain type of relationship with God, that often leads you away from God, because only God knows what your unique path is to be.

00:04:36.035 --> 00:04:45.057
So your path is going to look different, it's going to sound different, it's going to proceed at a different rhythm and at a different pace.

00:04:45.057 --> 00:04:47.564
We're going to be different places at different times.

00:04:47.564 --> 00:04:52.213
Sometimes you're going to be talking about what God's done.

00:04:52.213 --> 00:04:54.908
Sometimes you're going to be talking about what he hasn't done.

00:04:54.908 --> 00:05:02.146
Sometimes you're going to be crying because of the mercy that God's shown you.

00:05:02.146 --> 00:05:07.995
Sometimes you're going to be furious that God let you down.

00:05:08.939 --> 00:05:14.610
When we look at this biblically, what role do cliches play in the Bible?

00:05:14.610 --> 00:05:24.291
First of all, are there cliches in the Bible, or is it something about just something we're messing up as humans and the way we're applying them?

00:05:24.291 --> 00:05:41.461
One of the challenges is separating a cliche, a repeated truth or a point that's made emphatically and seems like something we need to be saying, something we need to be calling upon, versus a worthless group of words.

00:05:41.461 --> 00:05:48.894
What I would say is was Christ more interested in what you said or what you did?

00:05:48.894 --> 00:06:00.845
Do you think Christ is more concerned with what you say or what you do, or what you say you believe, versus what in your heart?

00:06:00.845 --> 00:06:03.170
You know you believe or disbelieve?

00:06:03.170 --> 00:06:20.588
The way Christ is depicted to us, and indeed the way he's depicted in the Bible and based off the things that he said and did and taught, Christ wasn't really a superficial person.
