How Removing Guilt and Shame Helps Christians Overcome Addiction

How Removing Guilt and Shame Helps Christians Overcome Addiction

Discover a counterintuitive yet effective approach to breaking bad habits through removing guilt and shame rather than intensifying it. Jimmy James Johnson shares his personal journey of finally quitting smoking after 15 failed attempts using a technique he calls "Permit It to Quit It."

• Christians struggle with bad habits just like everyone else
• Traditional approaches often increase guilt and shame, creating more stress
• The "Permit It to Quit It" technique removes psychological barriers to change
• Biblical support comes from "all things are permitted, but not all things are helpful"
• The law naturally sows seeds of rebellion in human psychology
• Self-condemnation creates the emotional states that trigger bad habits
• Removing pressure and guilt can create the emotional space needed for real change
• Personal testimony of permanently quitting smoking using this approach

Try giving yourself permission to struggle while working toward positive change—you might find freedom where rigid rules have failed.

00:00:00.059 --> 00:00:02.588
Christians have bad habits, just like everyone else.

00:00:02.588 --> 00:00:19.852
Maybe it's adultery, maybe it's lying, maybe it's violence, smoking, drinking, pornography, overeating, selling, discord between people, not falling through on your vow to God or to others, betraying people's trust.

00:00:19.852 --> 00:00:26.925
What are your bad habits, what are you supposed to do about it, and what does the Bible say about renting yourself free from them?

00:00:26.925 --> 00:00:40.031
Jimmy James Johnson, guilt-free faith going to get you feeling better about yourself so that you can walk in victory today, growing up in the church, I was never told that bad habits were part of the Christian walk.

00:00:40.031 --> 00:00:42.024
Some of them were having affairs.

00:00:42.024 --> 00:00:45.932
Some of them were taking a sip of the whiskey before the service.

00:00:45.932 --> 00:00:47.405
Maybe the pastor right.

00:00:47.405 --> 00:00:51.210
All these things were going on, but rarely were they ever talked about.

00:00:51.210 --> 00:00:53.945
What does it mean to be a Christian with a bad habit?

00:00:53.945 --> 00:00:54.828
This helped me.

00:00:54.828 --> 00:00:56.091
Let's see if it'll help you.

00:00:56.481 --> 00:00:59.229
I'm going to take a concrete example from my own life.

00:00:59.229 --> 00:01:00.783
I wanted to quit smoking.

00:01:00.783 --> 00:01:03.790
Particularly as I got into my 20s.

00:01:03.790 --> 00:01:07.402
I started to feel like man.

00:01:07.402 --> 00:01:08.203
I'm really not enjoying this.

00:01:08.224 --> 00:01:14.045
You know that smoking is not doing you any favors, right, but the fact remains that quitting smoking isn't easy.

00:01:14.045 --> 00:01:16.451
Rarely do you succeed right out of the gate.

00:01:16.451 --> 00:01:25.007
They say that the average person tries quitting numerous times before they're successful, and I personally can attest to that.

00:01:25.007 --> 00:01:30.918
I don't know how many times I quit over those years, but it could have definitely been 15 times.

00:01:30.918 --> 00:01:33.468
Sometimes you quit because you just felt sick.

00:01:33.468 --> 00:01:38.825
Sometimes you quit because you had just heard of somebody that had died of a smoking-related illness.

00:01:38.825 --> 00:01:52.820
But regardless of what it was, it still would grab onto you and you would find yourself in a time of weakness, stress, depression or maybe just being around other people that were smoking and would just break you down.

00:01:52.820 --> 00:01:59.861
One of the things that I discovered for myself was that trying to make this hard stop of quitting wasn't working.

00:01:59.861 --> 00:02:01.424
It hadn't worked in the past.

00:02:01.424 --> 00:02:04.727
I had no reason to believe that it was going to work in the future.

00:02:04.727 --> 00:02:15.651
So I started experimenting with this idea of let's remove the restriction, the guilt, the shame of smoking and see how that gives me more breathing room.

00:02:16.240 --> 00:02:21.953
Most Christians you talk to would never suggest oh yeah, just give yourself more leeway to do that.

00:02:21.953 --> 00:02:24.849
That will end up chipping away at your addiction.

00:02:24.849 --> 00:02:28.165
Nobody's going to say that they're going to hit you with the law.

00:02:28.165 --> 00:02:32.707
They're going to say you're not supposed to do that or smoking's bad for you.

00:02:32.707 --> 00:02:34.633
There's no ifs, ands or buts.

00:02:34.633 --> 00:02:36.139
So-and-so died from it.

00:02:36.139 --> 00:02:36.860
You got to quit.

00:02:36.860 --> 00:02:38.182
You got to quit, you got to quit.

00:02:38.182 --> 00:02:40.165
How many times has somebody said that to you?

00:02:40.165 --> 00:02:40.826
You got to quit.

00:02:40.986 --> 00:02:46.514
This could be smoking, drugs, workaholism, infidelity, binge eating.

00:02:46.514 --> 00:02:55.705
It encompasses a great many things, some of which we name acceptable, but most of them are not things that people proudly stand up and go.

00:02:55.705 --> 00:02:57.109
Yeah, that's what I'm into.

00:02:57.109 --> 00:03:09.794
And similarly, people aren't going to proudly stand up and say you know what man you need to permit that until you quit that up and say you know what man you need to permit that until you quit that, nobody's going to stand up in church and say, wait, I have an idea, I have an idea.

00:03:09.794 --> 00:03:16.331
Instead of just praying for a miracle that they would wake up tomorrow and not want to smoke, how about we take another approach?

00:03:16.331 --> 00:03:18.983
How about you just permit that to quit that?

00:03:18.983 --> 00:03:22.588
How about you permit that to quit that?

00:03:23.109 --> 00:03:23.830
What does it mean?

00:03:23.830 --> 00:03:33.973
It means taking off the pressure, the guilt, the shame, the embarrassment, all the negative self-talk, the beating up on yourself.

00:03:33.973 --> 00:03:42.007
It means removing all of that, just tuning that right out, and you might be saying that's the opposite of where I want to go.

00:03:42.007 --> 00:03:46.948
I'm not trying to convince myself that this is okay, that I want to keep on smoking.

00:03:46.948 --> 00:03:49.889
I'm not suggesting that's what you're doing.

00:03:49.889 --> 00:03:59.689
What you're actually doing is removing some of the emotional and psychological barriers that are actually keeping you stuck in that habit.

00:04:00.259 --> 00:04:01.224
And this is what I mean.

00:04:01.224 --> 00:04:04.627
You're stressed out, right, you smoke a cigarette.

00:04:04.627 --> 00:04:06.525
Now you're beating up on yourself, you're shaming yourself.

00:04:06.525 --> 00:04:07.770
You, I mean you stressed out, right, you smoke a cigarette.

00:04:07.770 --> 00:04:09.415
Now you're beating up on yourself, you're shaming yourself, you hate yourself.

00:04:09.415 --> 00:04:09.757
You're a loser.

00:04:09.757 --> 00:04:10.539
You can't stop this.

00:04:10.539 --> 00:04:11.683
You can't stop that.

00:04:11.683 --> 00:04:13.169
What are people going to say?

00:04:13.169 --> 00:04:14.665
People are going to smell it on you.

00:04:14.665 --> 00:04:23.408
But when you start that self-talk, that internal dialogue, that condemnation, that guilt cycle going, all you want is another cigarette.

00:04:23.408 --> 00:04:27.620
Isn't that strange?

00:04:27.620 --> 00:04:29.225
That actually makes you want another cigarette.

00:04:29.225 --> 00:04:29.305
Why?

00:04:29.305 --> 00:04:37.348
Because one of the triggers for you smoking is stress, is depression, is feeling hopeless, is despair.

00:04:37.348 --> 00:04:46.372
So here, every time you have a setback, you beat yourself up into a state that's sure to push you into another setback.

00:04:46.372 --> 00:04:49.007
So that's the cycle you get into.

00:04:49.480 --> 00:04:50.766
I've experienced this with smoking.

00:04:50.766 --> 00:04:52.165
I've experienced this with food.

00:04:52.165 --> 00:05:02.771
I call this the Jimmy James Johnson permit it to quit technique, and what it means is what it says that we have to permit some things to quit them.

00:05:02.771 --> 00:05:10.966
We can't always break a cycle by guilting and beating up ourselves, not allowing ourselves an inch.

00:05:10.966 --> 00:05:16.047
We can't give ourselves any grace, we can't have a bad day, we can't have a setback.

00:05:16.047 --> 00:05:29.665
What I would submit to you that I've personally experienced in my life is how this shocking and surprising technique can work, and I'm actually going to tie this into the Bible, believe it or not.

00:05:29.665 --> 00:05:34.966
So you're going to want to watch the rest of this to see how I've got to pull off this magic act.

00:05:34.966 --> 00:05:38.420
Why can't we ever get somebody to say you know what?

00:05:38.420 --> 00:05:42.411
Maybe, just maybe psychologically, the way we're built?

00:05:42.411 --> 00:05:43.615
There's something to this.

00:05:43.615 --> 00:05:47.887
I think it's a matter of the law, like the biblical law.

00:05:47.887 --> 00:05:51.077
I'm going to tie this into the Bible in two ways.

00:05:51.077 --> 00:05:53.382
This might shake up the comment board a little bit.

00:05:54.524 --> 00:06:00.742
One all things are permitted to me, but not all things are good for me.

00:06:00.742 --> 00:06:02.826
Just think about that.

00:06:02.826 --> 00:06:08.505
That's not a verse you expect to hear out of the Bible One of a million times.

00:06:08.505 --> 00:06:18.377
When it pays to read the Bible for yourself, because you'll be surprised at the things that people leave out or edit or turn into what they want it to be.

00:06:18.377 --> 00:06:23.295
And some people will say that's what I'm doing and that's fine, because that's the whole thing.

00:06:23.295 --> 00:06:24.500
This is guilt-free faith.

00:06:24.500 --> 00:06:27.346
If you're looking for guilt, you're in the wrong place.

00:06:27.346 --> 00:06:28.951
We don't get down like that here.

00:06:29.673 --> 00:06:31.423
When I read that verse it really struck me.

00:06:31.423 --> 00:06:35.252
All things are permitted to me, but not all things are helpful.

00:06:35.252 --> 00:06:41.521
It's a real head-scratcher because you just read all through the Old Testament about all these things that weren't permitted.

00:06:41.521 --> 00:06:44.206
Here's somebody came down with the stone tablets.

00:06:44.206 --> 00:06:45.449
Here are all the laws.

00:06:45.449 --> 00:06:52.624
Here's all the atonement and sacrifices to expiate that sin, to cleanse you and Israel of that sin.

00:06:52.624 --> 00:07:02.369
And then you go into the New Testament and you're like, oh, jesus didn't sin and he came to save us and forgive us for our sins.

00:07:02.369 --> 00:07:08.504
So surely there's nothing that says go ahead and sin and it's just all good.

00:07:08.504 --> 00:07:10.708
What does that verse really mean?

00:07:11.629 --> 00:07:23.687
I think the significance of the verse is, for me personally, it's really not reasonable for a human being to expect themselves to not sin, even if it's just in their thoughts.

00:07:23.687 --> 00:07:25.709
That's just not happening.

00:07:25.709 --> 00:07:33.595
There's no one that you've ever met who hasn't sinned in some way every day, in thought, in deed.

00:07:33.595 --> 00:07:39.848
So if you accept that, then you have to think what would the justice be?

00:07:39.848 --> 00:07:42.814
What kind of God would be like?

00:07:42.814 --> 00:07:44.858
What kind of God would be like, oh, yeah.

00:07:44.858 --> 00:07:57.685
So all these things that you're naturally drawn towards, that we're labeling sins, yeah, we're just going to keep condemning you for those and Don't even dare take a break from that guilt.

00:07:57.685 --> 00:08:00.264
Don't take a break from that condemnation.

00:08:00.454 --> 00:08:01.519
There are people like that.

00:08:01.519 --> 00:08:03.220
For instance, I have OCD.

00:08:03.220 --> 00:08:07.654
There's one theme in OCD called scrupulosity.

00:08:07.654 --> 00:08:12.528
It's an obsession with morals or ethics or religious teaching.

00:08:12.528 --> 00:08:27.156
But basically people literally go through their day constantly analyzing their thoughts, what they're looking at, what they're planning, what their urges are, and they're monitoring this Throughout the day.

00:08:27.156 --> 00:08:27.899
That's a sin.

00:08:27.899 --> 00:08:29.963
See, I'm a sinner, I'm this, I'm that.

00:08:29.963 --> 00:08:34.705
It's lust, it's greed, I'm just some type of weak addict.

00:08:34.705 --> 00:08:37.102
I'm just a piece of junk.

00:08:37.102 --> 00:08:40.264
I don't see how that's really going to be helpful.

00:08:41.216 --> 00:09:15.048
You may know people, you may have grown up with people, you may have been to Catholic school with people who try to convince you that all these things are sins and that you're born this sinner, carrying this burden with you and you need to feel guilty, slogging along carrying this crappy version of yourself and I want to disagree with that because one I don't think that's healthy If you think about yourself as just a low-down, dirty sinner, then you're not going to be feeling good.

00:09:15.048 --> 00:09:26.591
If you're looking for Jesus to lift you up in victory, or you come out of the church feeling strong, at the same time you've convinced yourself that you're a total piece of crap.

00:09:26.591 --> 00:09:27.820
That's not going to happen.

00:09:27.820 --> 00:09:36.249
You can't tell yourself you're crap and that you're redeemed and wonderful all at the same time.

00:09:36.249 --> 00:09:40.395
All at the same time.

00:09:40.416 --> 00:09:46.251
I think that's one of the reasons why people have trouble in the Christian church, because they're like I don't understand how these two things can be true at the same time.

00:09:46.251 --> 00:09:48.639
That's a lot of mental gymnastics for me.

00:09:48.639 --> 00:10:02.549
And when Christ was saying, come to me as a child, come to me in that type of simplicity, there's nothing simple about that crazy bit of twisting and turning on yourself.

00:10:02.549 --> 00:10:11.370
If God loves you, then surely His plan for you isn't for you to walk around feeling like crap every day.

00:10:11.370 --> 00:10:13.965
We're supposed to be focused on the cross, right.

00:10:13.965 --> 00:10:18.407
We're supposed to be focused on redemption and victory and love.

00:10:18.407 --> 00:10:21.062
We can't do that at the same time.

00:10:21.062 --> 00:10:24.758
We're focused on our failings and flaws and sins.

00:10:25.399 --> 00:10:43.380
Similarly, with these bad habits going back to smoking, it's really hard to give up a habit that's triggered by your emotional state, your stress, the cortisol, all that stuff, while at the same time you're creating that very state in yourself.

00:10:43.380 --> 00:10:48.745
You're adding to your stress, you're adding to your cortisol and your adrenaline.

00:10:48.745 --> 00:10:51.583
You're not eating well and not sleeping right.

00:10:51.583 --> 00:11:01.166
So, yes, you're going to keep relapsing because you have no reservoir of wellness that's going to give you the fuel to free you from wanting that.

00:11:01.166 --> 00:11:06.226
Because if you're going to try to white-knuckle it, some people think that's the way to break addictions.

00:11:06.226 --> 00:11:07.841
Maybe sometimes that is the way.

00:11:08.575 --> 00:11:13.386
This isn't meant to be like a one-size-fits-all for everything, at all times, forever.

00:11:13.386 --> 00:11:17.566
This is an unconventional technique that I myself have used.

00:11:17.566 --> 00:11:20.322
And here are the two biblical tie-ins.

00:11:20.322 --> 00:11:25.523
One, all things are permitted to me, but not all things are helpful.

00:11:25.523 --> 00:11:28.538
Now, that sounds like a reasonable verse, isn't it?

00:11:28.538 --> 00:11:29.759
Quite?

00:11:29.759 --> 00:11:37.445
Literally, everything is permitted, because nobody can stop you from just going and doing whatever it is you want to do.

00:11:37.445 --> 00:11:45.062
And secondly, I think we can all agree that not everything we can do is necessarily helpful or good for us.

00:11:45.062 --> 00:11:47.448
We could go out and get in trouble.

00:11:47.448 --> 00:11:50.522
I could go out and eat some fast food.

00:11:50.522 --> 00:11:52.246
My body's not going to appreciate that.

00:11:52.246 --> 00:11:56.186
I could take up smoking again my body's not going to appreciate that.

00:11:56.186 --> 00:11:58.561
These things are not against the law.

00:11:58.561 --> 00:11:59.845
Nobody can stop me.

00:11:59.845 --> 00:12:01.839
But they're not good for me.

00:12:01.839 --> 00:12:03.765
They're not helpful to me.

00:12:03.765 --> 00:12:09.000
I'm ultimately not going to be feeling better having done them To me.

00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:13.436
That's a much more compassionate and realistic approach to Christianity.

00:12:13.436 --> 00:12:15.019
That's the first verse.

00:12:15.600 --> 00:12:22.309
Second, there is a verse that talks about how the law sows the seed of rebellion.

00:12:22.309 --> 00:12:25.345
I'll have to put it into description, but here's the thing.

00:12:25.345 --> 00:12:28.985
It sounds strange, but we've all seen this.

00:12:28.985 --> 00:12:35.743
What's the first thing a kid does when you tell them they can't do something Exactly what you just told them they couldn't do?

00:12:35.743 --> 00:12:37.701
It's rebellion.

00:12:37.701 --> 00:12:43.559
Some adults are also very obvious in this regard, but I think that's the whole point.

00:12:43.559 --> 00:12:45.043
Right Is that?

00:12:45.403 --> 00:12:54.977
Whether we're talking about children, whether we're talking about adults, there's something about the human psyche that doesn't like being told what to do.

00:12:54.977 --> 00:13:00.928
We don't like someone putting their foot down on something we want or desire.

00:13:00.928 --> 00:13:03.864
We don't want someone opposing our will.

00:13:03.864 --> 00:13:19.412
When somebody tries to lay down the law on us whether that's what time we're supposed to go to bed tonight because we're a kid, or why we're supposed to stay faithful in a committed relationship those things sow the seeds of rebellion.

00:13:19.412 --> 00:13:24.240
There's that little, that pulling that jolt, wait, whoa?

00:13:24.240 --> 00:13:29.125
No I, I want to do something different from that.

00:13:29.125 --> 00:13:30.660
I have a better plan.

00:13:30.660 --> 00:13:32.019
I know better.

00:13:32.019 --> 00:13:34.022
I'm free to do what I want.

00:13:34.022 --> 00:13:36.964
You can see the truth in that verse.

00:13:36.964 --> 00:13:40.686
Yes, the law actually creates rebellion.

00:13:40.686 --> 00:13:45.907
Now that could go down a whole rabbit hole, because then it'd be like why would God then make the law?

00:13:45.907 --> 00:13:49.065
Because then he would have known that people would have broken it.

00:13:49.634 --> 00:13:58.749
This video isn't going to cover all those things, but let's just agree that the law sows the seeds of rebellion in your heart.

00:13:58.749 --> 00:14:18.068
So think about this, like in the smoking example as soon as you're trying to hammer yourself, trying to put your foot down on yourself I'm never smoking, I hate smoke, I'm never going to smoke again You're just planting that seed, that rebellion, that psychological pushback.

00:14:18.068 --> 00:14:31.182
It's just meeting you, however hard you're pushing the law on yourself, you're pushing down on yourself with the law and with guilt and with shame, and it's just pushing right back.

00:14:31.182 --> 00:14:38.416
I got to do this, or I feel like doing this, or I had a bad day, or what difference does it even make?

00:14:38.416 --> 00:14:44.106
There's that constant tension, all that torquing going on, all those emotions.

00:14:44.106 --> 00:14:51.306
That's not getting you any closer to the emotional freedom that you may need to actually quit smoking.

00:14:52.427 --> 00:15:05.875
There's an irony there by declaring something bad, we can get ourselves into trouble without knowing it, particularly if we haven't considered this aspect of human psychology and we haven't read those parts of the Bible.

00:15:05.875 --> 00:15:09.022
Haven't you ever told somebody to quit smoking?

00:15:09.022 --> 00:15:12.389
And it seemed like they're digging in even deeper.

00:15:12.389 --> 00:15:16.341
You keep telling them and they're just digging in.

00:15:16.341 --> 00:15:18.908
It's not because they're a bad person.

00:15:18.908 --> 00:15:25.335
It's not because they're saved or not saved, or there's a generational curse on them or something like that.

00:15:25.335 --> 00:15:35.710
No, it's because, for whatever reason, god told us that the way that we're constructed is, we will rebel when the law is pushed on us.

00:15:35.710 --> 00:15:39.082
Does it make a little bit more sense now?

00:15:39.082 --> 00:15:46.245
Remove the law, remove the guilt, the shame, the pressure from yourself.

00:15:46.245 --> 00:15:48.876
Let me tell you what happened with me.

00:15:48.876 --> 00:16:02.650
Let me tell you what happened with me Once I removed that dire battle over smoking is bad and oh, it's going to kill you tomorrow and oh, nobody can quit and oh, why don't you have the willpower?

00:16:08.914 --> 00:16:10.417
Once I started dropping that, I started to feel a lot more relaxed.

00:16:10.417 --> 00:16:12.418
The tension started coming out of me.

00:16:12.418 --> 00:16:24.831
I started accepting and loving myself more, and with that came less stress, I was eating better, I started exercising more.

00:16:24.831 --> 00:16:36.260
I made a decision that I wasn't going to hate myself for, whatever my habits, my weaknesses, I still knew it wasn't good.

00:16:36.260 --> 00:16:45.004
In fact, the reason why I'm telling you about this permitted to quit it approach is because it worked, and that's when I coined the approach.

00:16:45.004 --> 00:16:55.143
I was like yo, I'm going to permit it to quit it, I'm going to smoke these cigarettes, I'm going to enjoy myself, I'm going to permit it to quit it, I'm going to smoke these cigarettes, I'm going to enjoy myself, I'm going to have a good time with it, and it's going to peter out.

00:16:55.143 --> 00:16:56.739
I've tried the other ways.

00:16:56.739 --> 00:16:57.923
I've tried hypnosis.

00:16:57.923 --> 00:16:59.200
I've tried cold turkey.

00:16:59.200 --> 00:17:00.318
What do I have to lose?

00:17:00.318 --> 00:17:01.803
That's what I did.

00:17:01.803 --> 00:17:05.676
I permitted it to quit it and I quit it.

00:17:05.676 --> 00:17:15.742
After that period of time when I took that philosophy and coined this phrase that I'm sharing with you, I've never had a cigarette since then.

00:17:15.742 --> 00:17:21.066
I quit smoking and never even had a craving for it again.

00:17:22.326 --> 00:17:24.228
Is that a technique you could use?

00:17:24.228 --> 00:17:28.671
Would you like to unravel these bad habits you can't seem to get rid of?

00:17:28.671 --> 00:17:31.492
Maybe it's time to consider another approach.

00:17:31.492 --> 00:17:41.402
Some people hate me for saying it, but with a little knowledge of the Bible and a little bit of creativity and some critical thinking.

00:17:41.402 --> 00:17:45.088
I think the Bible does leave you some groundwork for this.

00:17:45.815 --> 00:17:47.580
I believe there is some structure here.

00:17:47.580 --> 00:17:49.526
I don't think this is a nutty idea.

00:17:49.526 --> 00:18:06.636
There are bad habits that are hurting you or they're hurting other people and, practically speaking, if you need it to end, you need to be like pulling on to whatever life vest you can find After you've tried to go cold turkey and failed.

00:18:06.636 --> 00:18:17.769
You know you tried this other time and then people found out and they hated on you and talked about you and talked down to you, and then you hated on yourself and talked down on yourself.

00:18:17.769 --> 00:18:24.748
As soon as you're done with all those things, maybe give permitted acquitted a try.

00:18:24.748 --> 00:18:26.336
I'm not a psychologist.

00:18:26.336 --> 00:18:27.680
This isn't medical advice.

00:18:27.680 --> 00:18:37.277
This is just something Jimmy James Johnson invented for myself and perhaps it saved my life and it could do the same for you.
